There aren’t many options for true wooded areas in Houston, so one typically ends up driving an hour or so to one of the State Parks in order to escape the city. For me, these parks are too touristy, so I thought we should try out the deep woods of the Sam Houston National Forest.

The scenery is pretty redundant, and the creek isn’t the clearest thing you’ve ever seen, but we had fun practicing wearing our packs for an extended period of time while listening to the sound of nature. It was a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon with great weather.

This was the Winter Bayou Hike trail, and we hiked about 6 miles total. We stopped shortly at one of the cross-streets to chat and then turned around to head back to the car. We only saw one other group of people, and it was a small family also doing a quick day-hike.
